What is a personality disorder?

A personality disorder is described as having unhealthy coping mechanisms, inflexibility, and adaptability challenges.

These disorders can lead to unhealthy behavior patterns like alcohol or drug misuse, impulsivity, and negative interactions with other people. If you or a loved one struggles with any of these concerns, see Sandra at SanCharles Behavioral Healthcare Services LLC for an evaluation.

What are the different types of personality disorders?

Personality disorder symptoms are based on the specific disorder you have. The different types  include:

Group A (schizotypal, schizoid, and paranoid)

Group A personality disorders contribute to abnormal or odd thinking patterns. You might be highly suspicious of other people or have little to no emotion.

Group B (histrionic, antisocial, borderline, and narcissistic)

Group B disorders can lead to paranoia, impulsivity, an exaggerated sense of your own abilities, and unpredictable thinking.

Group C (avoidant, obsessive-compulsive, and dependent)

Group C personality disorders are described as controlling or obsessive behaviors, severe anxiety in social situations, and difficulty maintaining healthy interpersonal relationships.

Your ability to appropriately interact with other people can be strained because of a personality disorder. It may lead to problems at work, in school, at social events, and in your family life. Personality disorders also increase the risk of legal problems, job loss, and addiction.

What may increase the risk of a personality disorder?

The cause of personality disorders isn’t entirely clear. They may develop because of a combination of environmental factors and genetics.

Risk factors include poor impulse control, an urge for risky behaviors, and unhealthy early life experiences. An unstable or non-supportive home environment and a history of neglect, abuse, or other trauma increase the chance of having a personality disorder.

How is a personality disorder diagnosed?

Sandra uses DSM-5 criteria to diagnose personality disorders during a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. She asks about your moods, behaviors, thoughts, emotions, lifestyle, and interpersonal relationships.

Sandra also reviews your current medications, medical history, treatment preferences, and goals to create a personalized mental health treatment that helps you overcome challenges.

How are personality disorders treated?
